COVER SKETCH

The cover concept I sent into Marvel Comics Editors Wil Moss and Daniel Ketchum for approval.

Roughs were drawn at 2" x 3" in my sketchbook using Warm Grey Copics then colored in Photoshop CS3.

Initial Pencils

Drawn in Light Blue on 12" x 18" Bristol Board

Quickly roughed in the drawing making sure the composition still help.
I printed out my rough in light blue on the paper to ensure the composition was positioned correctly.

Erase and refine again.

COLOR

FLATS

The first stage of color is called flats - flatting allows me to choose an area to color at any point throughout the coloring process.

I try to adjust the colors to their medium value or imprimatura - I use this as the starting point for the piece.

BACKGROUND

First thing I did was to get the background figured out - notice the right side is not completely done but the PATTERN is figured out.

INITIAL COLOR (ROUGH IN)

I colored this on my Cintiq 22 HD using Photoshop CS3 .

Here I rough in quickly all the medium lights and darks on the figures and cast initial shadows.

Using the Pencil Tool at 100% to knock those in.

RIM LIGHT

Next I come in at a variety  from 50- 100 % pencil hitting the medium lights and darks over the imprimatur color.

I add in the bright RIM lighting on a separate layer sometimes, so I can make sure the dark that meets is at it's maximum - the dark on the background layer, the bright light on the upper RIM layer.

COLORING LINE ART

This is the icing on the cake step of the process.

Starting to color the line art - mostly the face and some of the rim lighting.

Refining the costume, getting the cape figured out.

Cleaning up the lines to be inked.

As much as I liked the initial drawing, the attitude wasn't right for the action/fight feel of these covers.

FINAL PENCILS

Had a great time drawing Kamala - really happy with how this turned out!

Happy 25th Anniversary to Image Comics

I did my first interior pages for Image Comics 22 years ago (yikes!) on Jim Lee’s WildC.A.T.S #18 (Travis Charest did the main story and I drew the backups in 18 and 19).

Today, Image Comics is home to my creator owned book, RED ONE!

Thanks for letting me be a part of it!

Here's to 25 more great years!
