Guardians of the Galaxy #5 Angela Variant Cover Step by Step

This week, Guardians of the Galaxy #5 ships and I provided the Angela Variant cover for it - here's how I created it!

Sketch was to feature the introduction of new character, Angela, and GOTG character Gamorra facing off against unseen foe.

Sketches drawn in my sketchbook, then cleaned and colored in Photoshop and sent off to Marvel Editor, Steve Wacker, for approval.

Initial pencil rough in drawn on 12 x 18 Bristol Board with Col Erase Light Blue and HB Pencil.

Next stage of pencils, adding more detail, and changing length of Gamorra's legs.

Honing in final details!

Final pencils.

Rachel starts inking in the Foreground, using #2 Sable Brush.

Moving forward on inks, still all brush at this point.

Final Inks

Flat colors, this is how my colors look at the beginning - the local colors and flat.

Roughed in the colors pretty quick and added a spacey background on a separate layer just to see how it looked.

Honing in on final look, cleaning and starting to covert lineart to color.

Final colors.

How the printed version looks!

San Diego Comic Con 2013 RECAP 2 Thursday and Friday

Back to action that was SDCC 2013!

Early Thursday, you can already feel things amping up a bit!

Before my Flesk Publications ( http://fleskpublications.com/flesksite/ ) panel, sitting with John Fleskes, Brom ( http://www.bromart.com ) , and Mark Schultz ( https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mark-Schultzs-Xenozoic-Tales-and-Other-Stories/223005194775 ), and host, actor, writer, filmmaker - Jonathan Leveck.

Hanging out Jason Schachter ( http://www.essentialsequential.com ) and Blacksad artist, Juanjo Guardino ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juanjo_Guarnido ) after the show.

Scored some excellent Eric Canete ( http://kahnehteh.blogspot.com ) drawings from Jason!

Ahh, San Diego Comic Con.

Getting rolling on some sketches before I head over to the con Friday morning.

My first sketch at SDCC 2013, Jedi Somebodyoranother.

The Drew Struzan ( http://www.drewstruzan.com ) panel Friday night, my first panel I've ATTENDED as a pro - just really cool to sit back and enjoy one of these and of course, to hear Drew speak.

Kitty Pryde Sketch San Diego Comic Con 2013 STEP BY STEP

Here's a little look behind how I made my Kitty Pryde and Lockheed sketch at Comic Con Int'l, 2013.

Working on 11 x16 Canson Mi-teintes Paper, I rough in the drawing with an Col Erase Light Blue Pencil. Then I go straight to "inking" the outline of the drawing with a small tipped (S, .005, .3) permanent pen (to avoid bleeding when I later use the Copics greys).

Once the drawing is outlined, I commence with Copic Warm Greys, generally on colored paper, I start with #2.

I use through #2 -#4 greys then start putting in the blacks as they are major part of this piece and alter the greys.

More details with the greys- and darker - up to #6 with the shadow areas.

Start using a White Prismacolor pencil for highlights.

Et voila, c'est fini!

More to come...

Balboa Park Tuesday Evening

At dinner with John Fleskes and everyone from Flesk Publications.

Discovering a GINORMOUS spider in Balboa Park with the guys from Flesk Publications - there is safety in numbers.

The pace begins to pick up on Wednesday!

Setting up the booth on Wednesday.

The doors open...

Day one over, time for dinner...

Aaron and I always go here the first day, unfortunately they switched to a con menu and removed all the great Italian food they have - maybe they will switch back next year.

On to Thursday!

The calm before - SDCC 2013

Ok, here's a little look behind SDCC before everything kicks off.

Aaron Lopresti's and my booth 4706 before we set up ... so peaceful!

A panorama of the interior of the quiet con site.

The eerily quiet exterior.

 Even the Gaslamp is quiet!

Alright, back to work!
